When do I need a building permit?

The following list are times when you need to apply for a building permit (PDF):

  • Adding or changing a wood or gas fireplace
  • Adding or changing a wood stove or a gas insert
  • Adding a window or changing the dimensions of a window
  • Additions (bedrooms, bathrooms, family rooms, etc.)
  • Changing a water heater
  • Constructing an accessory building over 120 square feet
  • Constructing a patio cover or carport
  • Electrical systems
  • Heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems
  • Installing a pool more than 24 inches deep
  • New buildings, including the placement of manufactured homes
  • Plumbing systems
  • Renovations (garage conversions, basement conversions, kitchen expansions, etc.)
  • Replacing a roof
