Work Starts on Stormwater Detention Basins

Release Date:  April 2, 2010

Construction work will begin the week of April 5th on two stormwater detention basins that will reduce the amount of stormwater flowing across the streets in town. One of the basins is located on the east side of Shasta Avenue and the other basin is located west of Sherman Street, behind the houses facing Knapp and Lennox Streets. Construction is expected to be completed by July 2010.

We would appreciate it if parents could keep an especially sharp eye on school-children in these areas during the construction. We are requesting that motorists and pedestrians to avoid the construction areas and use caution if they have to travel through the affected areas. The contractor will provide reasonable access to residences, but there may be some temporary street closures during construction.

The construction contract was awarded to the lowest bidder, Bellet Construction of Klamath Falls, Oregon. This work is one of the final elements of a $5 million grant received in 2006 to make numerous improvements in the City’s stormwater management system. The Department of Public Works has already completed two phases of the project.

These detention basins will delay storm water for several hours to reduce the peak runoff during large storms. Steve Neill, the City’s Director of Public Works, explains that slowing down the runoff will reduce the potential for flood damages in susceptible areas of town. The project is also expected to improve water quality, as well as the spawning and summer habitat of endangered steelhead and salmon, by reducing the amount of fertilizers, pesticides, trash, and other debris that reach Yreka Creek from the streets within the City.

City Starts Work on Two New Construction Projects

Release Date: April 23, 2009

Work started this week on two large construction projects in the City of Yreka. The contracts for the two projects were recently awarded to Ron Hale Construction of Shasta Lake City and Knife River Materials of Medford according to Steve Neill, Director of Public Works.

Knife River Materials will be working downtown to replace water mains and services on Fourth Street between Miner and Jackson and on Miner Street between Broadway and Fourth. Then, a new layer of asphalt concrete, typically known as an overlay, will be placed on Fourth Street between Miner and Rose. The water line replacement is funded by the City's Water Fund and the overlay is funded by the State Transportation Improvement Program.

Ron Hale Construction will be placing an asphalt concrete overlay on numerous streets throughout the City. Work has already started on Turre Street. Portions of Campbell Avenue, Herzog Street, Jackson Street, and East Greenhorn Road will also receive a new overlay, and the construction will include additional streets in these general areas. This work is also funded by the State Transportation Improvement Program.

Residents are encouraged to utilize alternate routes to avoid construction in these areas. The contractor will maintain access to businesses, but the street may be closed one block at a time and parking may be restricted during the construction. "We would appreciate your patience and consideration as the Department of Public Works completes these important improvement projects," stated Neill.

Another project that is expected to be built this summer is a new storm drain across Main Street and to Yreka Creek just north of Bruce Street. Caltrans and the City a partnering to complete this project that will reduce flooding along Main Street (State Route 3) through Yreka.
