Steve Neill, P.E. - City Engineer

The Engineering Division of the Public Works Department reviews and approves parcel maps, subdivision maps and plans for public infrastructure improvements; reviews, approves, and inspects all public infrastructure improvements (i.e. streets, storm drains, water lines, sewer lines, sidewalks, etc.), issues encroachment permits, implements the City's transportation improvement program, and manages the design and construction of the majority of the City capital improvement projects.

The Yreka Municipal Code requires an Encroachment Permit be issued by the Department of Public Works BEFORE any work is done in the public right of way or on any City facility. This includes, but is not limited to, any work in the street, any work between the back of curb or back of sidewalk and the right of way line, and construction of, or modification of, curb, gutter, sidewalk, and driveway approaches. It also includes construction of, or modification of, or connection to, any City sewer, water, and storm drain facility.

A Building Permit issued by the Building Department is NOT an Encroachment Permit and does NOT authorize you or allow you to perform any work in the public right of way.

The City of Yreka uses construction standards of the City of Redding for public improvements. Standard Details for the City of Redding are available at their website.

Some of the standards for construction have been modified for specific conditions in Yreka. The following City of Yreka Standard Details may be viewed or downloaded by clicking on the links to the right.  The local standards are also available as a single document on the right, titled Supplement to the City of Redding Construction Standards.

Safe Routes to School

The Safe Routes to School Project is under construction. This project is designed to improve routes that students take to school by improving sidewalk conditions, installing electric signs to alert drivers to the students, and improving crosswalk markings. The work and location of the work are shown on the following map. The funding source of $400,000 is the Safe Routes to School Program administered by Caltrans, and the City is required to contribute 10% or $40,000. The contractor is R.B. Aldrich from Ft. Jones.
