Building Department

Mark Schmitt - Building Official/Fire Marshal

It is the job of the Building Department, and director, to make sure all of the buildings in the city are safe. They provide initial services such as building permits and forms, statistical information and answering questions. The Building Department also examines and approves plans, inspects construction and components that become part of a structure, act as Fire Marshalls and educate the public with regard to code requirements. Finally, the Building Department examines and approves specifications for compliance with building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, energy, fire, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), federal, state and local codes and ordinances.

Building Official Availability

The Building Official will be available for inspections on Tuesdays and Thursdays only. Scheduling an inspection requires at least 24-hours notice.

For building permits and applications please see our Codes Fees and Licenses page.

Building Inspections Matter

When something is improperly constructed or installed it can pose a hazard to the occupants and reduce the value of a building or home. The video below illustrates how dangerous an improperly installed water heater can be.
